At a minimum 5 speakers, a subwoofer, and a receiver. At the higher end 7 speakers, 2 subs, a preamp/processor, and a power amp. Then you can go as high as you want. I have heard of systems with 14 speakers, 4 subs, pre/pros, EQs, and power amps to drive it all.
However, with a good 5 speaker system, 2 powered subs, and a top of the line receiver you’ll have better sound than 95% of the systems out there.
with all that is listed, you need to ask yourself if the home theater that you intend to set up is meant more for movies and games. If so, then you may need to use digital co-exial cable to give a separate sound of a truly 3d sound experience
you need to buy pretty good speakers. at least 5 would be good. then you need to buy a good amplifier. it should have rated power that matches your speakers ratings. then you need to buy the cables to put it all together. dont go for the monster cables. they are proven that they are overpriced. they are only said to be high end. and keep in mind that what ive said here is only the begining and you could spend much more to get it to sound much better. but the typical consumer would be very satisfied with the things ive mentioned. and only buy the amount of speakers that is good for you room size too. no sense buying a 7 speaker system for a 12 foot wide room you know. and you also need a subwoofer for the low pitched sounds. i recommend a powered subwoofer with at least 200 watts for the best effect. you could get a bigger one for an even more exciting effect.
